Why Should You Take the Greenfield Hives & Honey Beekeeper Experience Tour? Have you ever wondered what happens inside a beehive? How thousands of honeybees work together as a single colony? Or where your honey actually comes from? The Greenfield Hives & Honey Beekeeper Experience Tour gives you the rare opportunity to step into the world of a beekeeper and experience the inner workings of a live honeybee colony firsthand.

Why Should You Care About Honeybees? Honeybees play a vital role in our food system, pollinating many of the fruits, vegetables, and crops we rely on every day. Yet most people have never looked inside a hive or seen how these incredible insects live, communicate, and work together. Whether you're a curious local, visiting Nova Scotia, a nature enthusiast, or simply looking for a unique family-friendly adventure, this experience offers a fascinating look at one of nature's most important creatures.

What Will You Learn? Your tour begins at the Bee Shed, where you'll learn about the different parts of a beehive, the life cycle of a honeybee, and why pollinators are so important to our environment and food supply. Then it's time to suit up and head into the apiary. With the guidance of Beekeeper Duncan, you'll: 🐝 Open a live beehive and observe thousands of active honeybees at work. 🐝 Learn how beekeepers use smokers and other specialized equipment to manage colonies safely. 🐝 Discover the different castes within the hive, including workers, drones, and the queen. 🐝 Search for eggs, pollen, nectar, capped honey, and developing brood. 🐝 Learn how bees communicate through the famous "waggle dance." 🐝 Explore how honey is made, stored, and harvested. 🐝 Gain insight into the challenges modern beekeepers face in maintaining healthy colonies.

What Makes This Experience Special? Reading about bees is one thing. Standing beside a living colony and holding a frame covered in thousands of honeybees is something entirely different. Honeybees are generally gentle when managed properly, and guests are encouraged to get close enough to truly appreciate their beauty and complexity. If we're lucky enough to spot the queen, you may even have the opportunity to capture a memorable photo with the most important bee in the hive. Each participant will have the opportunity to handle a frame of live honeybees and will receive one digital photo as a keepsake from their visit.

What Will You Leave With? By the end of the tour, you'll have a greater appreciation for honeybees, a better understanding of where honey comes from, and a firsthand look at the fascinating society hidden inside every beehive. Most importantly, you'll leave with an experience that few people ever get to have—the chance to open a live beehive and see the world through the eyes of a beekeeper. Tour content may vary based on weather conditions and seasonal bee activity. Tours are subject to availability

Will You Get Stung? It's one of the most common questions we hear—and the honest answer is possibly, but probably not. Honeybees are generally gentle insects and are far more interested in gathering nectar and caring for their colony than stinging people. During the tour, you'll be provided with a bee suit, veil, and gloves, and your beekeeper guide will explain how to move calmly and safely around the hives. Most guests complete the experience without being stung. However, we are working with live animals in an outdoor environment, and bees can occasionally become defensive. A sting is always a possibility whenever a hive is opened. Think of it like visiting a farm—you may not get muddy, but it's part of the experience. Likewise, while we take every reasonable precaution to minimize the chances of a sting, we cannot guarantee a sting-free visit. For many guests, any nervousness quickly disappears once they see how focused and gentle honeybees are. By the end of the tour, most people are amazed at how comfortable they felt standing beside thousands of bees. If you have a known allergy to bee stings, please contact us before booking. The safety of our guests is our highest priority, and this experience may not be suitable for individuals with severe allergic reactions to insect stings.
