This is a fun, hands-on, and interactive tour of a complete beehive, where guests step into the boots of a real beekeeper and experience the magic of the hive up close. Join us at the “Bee Shed” for the full beekeeper experience. Whether you live in Nova Scotia or are visiting from away, opening a live beehive surrounded by thousands of active honeybees is something you won’t soon forget. Your tour begins with a friendly introduction to the critical role honeybees play in our food chain. Then it’s time to suit up! With veils and gloves on, you’ll learn to light and use a smoker before heading out into the apiary yard for an up-close look at a working hive. Take a peek inside with Beekeeper Duncan and discover the fascinating world within. Learn about honeybee biology, lifecycles, and the different castes in the colony. Watch for worker bees performing their famous waggle dance, spot drones, and explore how honey is produced and stored. We’ll search for the queen bee—your chance to get incredibly close to royalty! Guests are encouraged to safely interact with the hive, handle real beekeeping equipment, and even hold a frame of honeybees or fresh honey. Honeybees are generally gentle, so you may even snap a once-in-a-lifetime selfie with the queen herself. Each participant will have the opportunity to have a digital photo taken to remember their experience. Tour content may vary depending on weather conditions and the seasonal activity of the bees and blooms—making every visit unique.
